I am excited to continue Dave Keane’s legacy as PVFF’s Conservation Lead. Always feel free to reach out to me (lcsmoss63@yahoo.com) with your thoughts, ideas, and conservation oriented activities you would like us to champion.
We are working with Stream Link to identify spring and fall tree maintenance and planting events. Their schedule will be developed soon so stay tuned.
We are looking to schedule a stream clean-up in April at our home stream, the Catoctin Creek Park & Nature Center. A date will be provided to the membership once it is finalized. We look forward to seeing you out there.
The Trout in Classroom program is in full swing. PVFF members participating this year included Pete D’Adamo, Don and Ruby Fine, Rick Loose, and Ed Dizon as well as non-member Sonny Bell. Eggs from the Albert Powell Hatchery were delivered to approximately 16 schools in Frederick County and the PVFF Trout Pen before Christmas and the kids are now watching the fry grow. Each school has a home creek to release these trout into in the spring. Please contact me (lcsmoss63@yahoo.com) if you would like to attend one of the release events and help our youth learn more about trout and fly fishing.
DNR Regulation Changes – Proposed rule changes regarding trout fishing in non-tidal waters were initiated last year and became effective (unchanged from the original proposal) on January 20, 2025. A summary of the changes can be found on the DNR website.
I came across an interesting article in the Bay Journal related to coal ash dumps in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed including impacts on the Potomac River. In my former life as a consulting engineer, I worked for both power companies and municipalities downstream of coal ash facilities in North Carolina. Besides the human impact, impacts to fisheries were always a major concern. Please take a read if interested.
